Since they had been established, the three packs lived in harmony until the forest territory of the Midnight Shade Shadows Pack was destroyed in a monstrous inferno. The entire pack fled, except for one of the Alpha’s female pups. That female lived on the territory alone for three years, waiting for wolves to join her pack of one. Over time, other wolves did come and the pack was restored. Soon, conflicts arose between all three packs, especially between the Midnight Shade Shadows Pack and the Fire Ashen Lands Pack. The Midnight Shade Shadows Pack turned to the Earthen Water Plains Pack for support, but none was given. After a year, the tensions cooled and peace once again returned. Sadly, this was not to last. An infectious disease spread throughout Astheria; its source was unknown to the wolves. Many succumbed to the sickness, leaving the packs with few members.

----

Harmony seems to have returned to Astheria, but unbeknownst to the wolves, a new threat is on the rise and for the first time in eight years, three packs will have to become one in order to survive.

The Alpha/the Alphess
Each pack has a leader- the alpha if they are male, the alphess if they are female. If the leader takes a mate, then their mate also becomes, to a lesser extent, a leader of the pack.
The Alpha is responsible for coordinating the pack, assigning roles, diplomacy with other packs, and doing anything they see fit to keep the pack running smoothly.

The Betas
If the Alpha feels they need additional help running the pack, they will select a Beta- a second-in-command to the Alpha, who has equal power in his or her commands (although the Beta's commands can, of course, be overridden by the Alpha.)

Advisors
A pack will usually have an advisor- a wise wolf, always loyal to the pack, but too old to fight for the pack as Alpha or Beta. The saying goes that the advisor is "the Alpha's Alpha," and in some ways at least, this is true. Although the advisor will have virtually no command over the pack, their advice is usually taken and always taken into consideration by the Alpha.

Group Leader
The three group leaders- Hunter, Scout, and Warrior- all have equal power in the pack. They select who will join their ranks, although their decisions must be approved by the Alpha. Good leaders who gain the trust of the Alpha will have more free rein over his or her group.

Group Members
The members in the three groups- hunters, scouts, and warriors- are seen as elite by the ordinary members, but have no special command rights over the lower pack members. They are chosen and trained depending on their skills- warriors and hunters must be good fighters, with endurance to back up their strength, although hunters focus more on speed, and scouts must be able to run fast to track enemy pack members and report back to their leader.

Ordinary Members
Ordinary members of the pack are usually those to pick up the more menial tasks- cleaning and storing food brought in by the hunters, taking care of the pups, guarding the territory- although they can also be taken on by the specialized groups to help with the more important tasks. Ordinary members are usually the newer ones because most packs cannot afford to keep experienced members at the lowest ranks without finding a group for them to become apprentices to.

Pups
Whether born into the pack or discovered by scouts, pups are usually taken care of the the lower-ranking members, and training is begun early if the pup shows promise in any of the skills. As they are not expected to do anything to help, they are free to romp and play under the older member's watchful eye.

Rebellion

Overthrowing the Leader
"But what if," you may ask, "my character is not happy with the current leader and wants to rebel? Can I?"
The answer, theoretically, at least, is yes. Due to the statistics used in fighting, if your character is wily enough to round up a group of rebels and fight the Alpha, they may attempt overthrowing their leader. However, unless the Alpha has done something to upset the masses, he is the one with the larger force fighting for him. So if you want your character to stage a rebellion, go right ahead, but be sure that you have the brawn to back up your brains. Life exiled from a pack with the reputation of a rebel is not a fun life for a wolf.

Making a Pack
"But if I don't want to take that risk, can't I abandon the pack and try and put together my own?" you may ask. Again, the theoretical answer is yes, but most of the land in Astheria is held by one of the three packs, or else inhabited by other animals or part of uninhabitable terrain, such as the swamp. But leaving the pack as a rogue and banding together with the outcast of other packs is a possibility.
